5 STRING BANJO
Before
electric amplification, and before steel
strung guitars started to make an impact, the
Banjo came into its hey-day. Banjos were loud and
durable. In England, Windsor banjos were made
until the beginning of the World War II. Probably
more Windsor banjos were made in England than any
other make. Pictured right is a Windsor
"Popular"; the "Model T Ford"
of the English banjo making industry. It has a
non-standard polished aluminium resonator to make
it even louder. Left, a
handy little clip is shown. This can hold down
the treble string behind the ninth fret to avoid
the need for over-tightening the string if the
banjo is in "G" tuning and a capo is
used behind the 2nd fret to play in the key of
"A". Old banjos can be masterpieces of
workmanship and decoration. One day, we hope to
publish a 5 String Banjo
Guide to give beginners some ideas about
what to do, how to progress and what arrangements
to make about moving home when they finally get a
banjo in their hands.
